Founded as a mining town in the late 1870s, Aspen has long been known for nourishing the arts. Starting with the Aspen Music Festival in 1949, the city has become a gathering place for musicians who have an abiding respect for nature and a sincere appreciation of each other’s talents. Musician-writers from John Denver to Burt Bacharach have staked out turf there, as have various members of The Eagles, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Joe Cocker, and many others.

2010 Aspen Songwriters Festival Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Music Legend John Oates and The Wheeler Opera House

Team Up For

7908’ THE ASPEN SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL

SEPTEMBER 16-19, 2010

           ASPEN—April 12, 2010--Singer and songwriter John Oates will host the city’s first annual songwriters festival at the Wheeler Opera House, as well as the Belly Up Aspen club and other local venues in the historic artists’ haven of Aspen, Colorado.  7,908 feet is Aspen’s altitude.

          Produced by the City of Aspen with Oates aboard as executive producer, the event will feature world renowned headlining artists, alongside famous and emerging new songwriters from all musical styles to perform their favorite works for the city’s residents and visiting music lovers. Such collaborations are certain to yield some memorable performances and behind-the-scenes stories as well.

           As half the legendary duo Hall & Oates and member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Oates contributes both stature and insight to the Festival.  “I’m inviting songwriters from all genres,” he says, “and asking them, ‘Who have you always wanted to play with but haven’t?’  Then we’ll see what happens. There has been a tremendous response to that question.  I think it will result in some really spectacular collaborations and performances. We’re also at a significant inflection point in the world of songwriting where there are these exciting cross-currents taking place between generations.  We want to encourage and nurture this aspect and provide a destination where this evolution can flourish.”

           Working with Oates to make 7908’ THE ASPEN SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL spectacular are the management and staff of Aspen’s 1889-vintage theater, the Wheeler Opera House.  Last year, Oates and the Wheeler staged a three-part singer-songwriter series called “The Stories Behind The Songs.”  “That was a great first collaboration,” says Wheeler Executive Director Gram Slaton, “and John had a lot of ideas afterwards that he wanted to explore for something bigger and better.  So this festival concept seems like a logical expansion of that original songwriter series.”

            A long-time resident of Aspen, Oates determined from the outset that the 2010 event wouldn’t be just another music festival.  “The City of Aspen has a great tradition of bringing together the best and the brightest minds and souls in the world to be inspired, share their idea and create in one of the most beautiful places on earth,” Oates explains. “My thought was to expand that vision, to create a festival that would celebrate songwriting in its purest form—the writers, their words and their music.  This is not about bands and big productions but rather an opportunity for the public to see and hear these amazingly talented songwriters in an intimate setting with high quality acoustics.  It all starts with a song and we will celebrate that.”

            “What we want to do with the Festival,” says Slaton, “is grow yet another branch on the creative aspen tree, and I can’t imagine a better partner to work with in this than John.  He is so committed to every kind of music, and encouraging new songwriting talent is a real passion for him.  He has originated an ongoing student songwriting competition among kids in the Roaring Fork Valley and has been jamming with everyone who comes to town from The Neville Brothers, Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas to Blues Traveler and Donovan Frankenreiter.  His energy is truly infectious and a wonder of nature.  I think we’re going to knock this Festival out of the park its very first year.”

For more information on 7908’ THE ASPEN SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL please call Wheeler Opera House Executive Director Gram Slaton at 970-920-5790 or email him at gram.slaton@ci.aspen.co.us

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM DARYL HALL AND JOHN OATES ABOUT THE PASSING OF TOM “T-BONE” WOLK

MARCH 1, 2010:

Daryl Hall:
To say that I am shocked is the ultimate understatement. T-Bone was my musical brother and losing him is like losing my right hand. It’s not if I will go on, but how. T-Bone was one of the most sensitive and good human beings that I have ever known. And, I can truly say that I loved him.

John Oates:
His character was pure and his unique and quirky personality touched everyone he encountered. His musical sensibility was peerless, any instrument that he touched resonated with a sensitivity and skill level that I have never experienced while playing with any other musician. He possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of styles and musical history which he referenced to support all the artists that he played with over the years. He became our band's musical director over time leading by example and by the deference and respect that everyone who played alongside him so rightfully accorded him. He made everyone he played with better. So many times when I'm working on a musical passage or part, I think to myself: "How would T-Bone play this" and aspire to his level every time I perform. To this day I always keep one of his "I Love Vermont" guitar picks with me where ever I go and know in my heart that starting today the Heavenly Band just got one of the greatest multi-instrumentalist of all time and that band will from this day forward sound better than they ever have before.

John donates a set of handwritten lyrics to "She's Gone" for the Americana Music Association's Auction

"She's Gone" was released as a single from Hall & Oates' 1973 album Abandoned Luncheonette, peaking at No. 60 on the Billboard Hot 100. After a cover version from Tavares, an American R&B band, topped the R&B chart in 1974, Atlantic Records re-released Hall & Oates' version two years later. It became a hit, reaching No. 7 on the Hot 100 chart. Lou Rawls also recorded the song for his 1975 album of the same name.

The lyrics were handwritten, autographed, and donated by John Oates specifically for this auction.

John Oates to be featured on "The Village: A Celebration of the Music of Greenwich Village"

SmallVillage.jpg

429 Records has brought together a stellar roster of artists for a project titled
“THE VILLAGE: A CELEBRATION OF THE MUSIC OF GREENWICH VILLAGE”
—a musical homage to an influential scene that thrived during an incomparable
era in the history of rock music. The Greenwich Village neighborhood of New
York City in the 1960’s was ground zero for a musical, political and social evolution--
McCarthy and the Red Scare era was over, the Vietnam War was simmering and
poised to explode, and the civil rights movement was gaining steam just as singers
like Peter Seeger, Bob Dylan and Odetta were hanging out and composing fierce and
fearless songs that reflected the social conscience of a generation. The neighborhood
was symbolic of a shared inspiration with artists worldwide gravitating to the vibrant
streets and clubs and as such helped change the course of popular music.

Featuring:
Shelby Lynne, Lucinda Williams, Bruce Hornsby, Rachael Yamagata, Amos Lee,
Sixpence None the Richer, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Marshall Crenshaw, Rocco
Deluca, Cowboy Junkies, John Oates, The Duhks, Los Lobos, Cary Brothers,
Jesse Malin, and Mikey Powell.

More than four decades after they started working together, the foundations of Daryl Hall and John Oates remain firmly planted in their native Philadelphia ’60s and ’70s soul and R&B, with the spirit of Gamble & Huff, Motown, the Adelphi Ballroom, and Tower Theatre never far from their thoughts. With more than 60 million album sales under their belt, Daryl Hall and John Oates have long since surpassed the Everly Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel as the biggest-selling – and longest lived – pop duo of all time.

A hefty chunk of those sales belong to the string of hit singles that kept Daryl Hall and John Oates at the top of the pop, R&B, AC, Dance, and album rock charts during the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s. There were six timeless #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 – “Rich Girl,” “Kiss On My List,” “Private Eyes,” “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do),” “Maneater,” and “Out Of Touch.” Another two dozen reached the Top 40, ten of which made it into the Top 10, among them “She’s Gone,” “Sara Smile,” “You Make My Dreams” (soundtrack centerpiece of the new hit movie (500) Days of Summer), “Did It In A Minute,” “One On One,” “Family Man,” “Say It Isn’t So,” “Adult Education,” “Method Of Modern Love,” and “Everything Your Heart Desires.”

The lion’s share of those singles helped send more than a dozen Daryl Hall and John Oates albums to RIAA gold, platinum and multi-platinum certification, starting with 1973’s Abandoned Luncheonette, and most notably encompassing their career-defining output of the ’80s: Voices, Private Eyes, H2O, Rock ’N Soul Part 1, Big Bam Boom, and the highly praised Live At The Apollo With David Ruffin & Eddie Kendrick.
Taking its title from one of their earliest singles, a song that has always summed up the duo’s individual and collective philosophy of being true to themselves, DO WHAT YOU WANT, BE WHAT YOU ARE: THE MUSIC OF DARYL HALL AND JOHN OATES marks the first comprehensive multi-CD, multi-label deluxe box set compilation ever assembled from their entire career’s work, four CDs containing 74 tracks (16 of them previously unreleased ). One of the most long-awaited box sets in pop music history will be available at physical and digital retail outlets starting October 6th through RCA/Legacy, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

Of special interest will be the 16 previously unreleased tracks, which can be roughly divided between studio material and live performances. Highlights of the live performances include:

“Lady Rain,” “Beanie G,” “Better Watch Your Back,” “Abandoned Luncheon ette,” and “When The Morning Comes,” five tunes [all drawn from their Abandoned Luncheonette (1973) and War Babies (1974) LPs] recorded at the New Victoria Theatre in London on October 3, 1975, the first Daryl Hall and John Oates show in England, where their popularity would rival the U.S.;

“I Want Someone,” from 2008, the first audio ever released from the popular LiveFromDarylsHouse.com web series – one of the songs that bonded Daryl Hall and John Oates together back in the ’60s, when they realized that they both loved the tune, as first done by Detroit R&B vocal group the Mad Lads on Stax-Volt in 1966;

“Everytime You Go Away,” recorded 1996 in Tokyo, an explosive 10-minute version of the song that was introduced on 1980’s Voices, and became a massive #1 U.S. hit for England’s Paul Young in 1985;
“Starting All Over Again,” recorded at Tokyo’s Budokan in 1995, an evocative take on Mel & Tim’s 1973 soul standard (originally covered by Daryl Hall and John Oates in 1990, on Change Of Season);
“Do What You Want, Be What You Are,” live in 2007 (the song that gives this box set its title), originally from 1976’s Bigger Than Both Of Us;
“So Close,” a song from 1990’s Change Of Season, is heard live in 2006 in Portland, Oregon.

Along with these, it is appropriate to highlight the two tracks that are drawn from Live At The Apollo With David Ruffin & Eddie Kendrick. The album celebrated Daryl Hall and John Oates’ headlining show with the two late former Temptations, at the re-opening night of the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, May 1985. “Possession Obsession” was all about excess in the ’80s, from their Big Bam Boom LP the year before; and the Temps’ medley of “The Way You Do The Things You Do/My Girl” speaks for itself.

Among the highlights of the previously unreleased studio material are the following gems:
The original demo version of “Have You Ever Been In Love,” written by Daryl Hall, recorded by Celine Dion on A New Day Has Come (2002);
A brand new (July 2009) recording of “Dreamer,” first demo’d in 1972 (for the Whole Oats LP) but not recorded at the time, and then the demo was lost;
“Gino (The Manager) 2009 Remix,” homage to their indefatigable manager of the ’70s and ’80s, Tommy Mottola, first heard on their self-titled 1975 LP, Daryl Hall & John Oates;
Also, three outtakes from original recording sessions: “Don’t Go Out,” full of New York street life darkness and paranoia in the ’80s, from Private Eyes; “Storm Warning,” a cover of the vintage R&B song by the Volcanoes (their ’66 label-mates on Arctic Records), from 1990’s Change Of Season; and “All The Way From Philadelphia,” from 2003’s Do It For Love.

Over the course of its four CDs, DO WHAT YOU WANT spans the Daryl Hall and John Oates story from their earliest sides recorded as teenagers on Philadelphia’s indie Arctic and Crimson labels (1966-67), through their Atlantic years (1972-75), a decade at RCA (1975-85), and their final major label association with Arista (1988-90), before launching their self-owned U-Watch label in 2002. Putting it all in perspective is a full-color 60-page booklet with never-before-seen photographs and rare memorabilia, including a new 2,300-word biographical liner notes essay written by veteran music journalist Roy Trakin.
Also supplied are thoroughly extensive track-by-track annotations written by native Philly journalist and author Ken Sharp, based on in-depth interviews with Daryl Hall and John Oates. In addition to his many other credits (Elvis Presley, KISS, Cheap Trick, Rick Springfield, more) Sharp has penned liner notes for the expanded edition reissues of the Daryl Hall and John Oates albums Daryl Hall & John Oates, X-Static, Voices, Private Eyes, H2O, and Big Bam Boom.
Throughout the 60-page booklet, an impressive world-class roster of artists and producers have contributed testimonials to the talent and influence of Daryl Hall and John Oates, including: Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, Carly Simon, Travis McCoy (Gym Class Heroes), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones), Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy), David Foster (producer), Dave Stewart, Pos (De La Soul), Todd Rundgren, August Darnell (Kid Creole & The Coconuts), Otis Williams (the Temptations), Dave One (Chromeo), Nile Rodgers, Rob Thomas (matchbox twenty), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), and Smokey Robinson.

Heralding the release of DO WHAT YOU WANT, the duo will debut the box set when QVC Presents the Daryl Hall & John Oates QSessions Live broadcast on Monday, September 21st at 6:00 p.m. (ET). During the one-hour interview and live performance special, cable shoppers will be able to pre-order the box set. Daryl Hall and John Oates are scheduled to perform a selection of songs on QVC, including “Rich Girl,” “Kiss On My List,” “Maneater,” “Private Eyes,” “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do),” “Sara Smile,” “She’s Gone,” and more. (Please check local listings.)
On October 23, Daryl Hall and John Oates will be among the final few concert acts to play farewell dates at South Philadelphia’s beloved [Wachovia] Spectrum, prior to its being demolished to make way for the new Philly Live! Complex. As always, the duo will be in the most prestigious company, with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band booked for October 13-14th and 19-20th; and Leonard Cohen on October 22nd; with Pearl Jam set as the official final act, with shows on October 27-28th and 30-31st.

Indicative of Daryl Hall and John Oates’ ’80s status was the landmark year, 1984-85. Their double-platinum album Big Bam Boom was spinning off four Top 40 hits, including the #1 “Out of Touch.” Elsewhere on the charts, Hall had collaborations going with Diana Ross (“Swept Away”) and Elvis Costello (“The Only Flame In Town”), while Paul Young was headed to #1 with “Everytime You Go Away.” Daryl Hall and John Oates were on the cover of Rolling Stone and were headlining the re-opening of the Apollo Theatre with their childhood heroes David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick of the Temptations. Daryl Hall and John Oates were spotlighted on the recordings and videos of “We Are The World” and “Sun City,” and headlined their own July 4th concert at the Statue of Liberty, drawing over 100,000 fans. A week later at the Live Aid concert at Philly’s JFK Stadium, they performed their own set (accompanied by Ruffin and Kendrick) and provided backup for Mick Jagger and Tina Turner.
The QVC and Spectrum events are just two of the high honors that continue to come Daryl Hall and John Oates’ way. In June, on the final night of the annual NARM (National Associa tion of Recording Merchandisers) convention in San Diego, Daryl Hall and John Oates received the chairman's award for sustained creative achievement. NARM president Jim Donio congratulated them “for their remarkable talents as singers, songwriters and musicians and for their inspiring creativity. Their soulful melodies have transcended four decades and crossed all demographics, and they have allowed multiple generations to enjoy their signature Rock and Soul music and appreciate their influence.”
Previous recipients of the NARM chairman's award include B.B. King, Chicago, Carlos Santana, Garth Brooks, Billy Joel, Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli and Fleetwood Mac. Clearly, Daryl Hall and John Oates are in the pantheon of popular music royalty.

DO WHAT YOU WANT, BE WHAT YOU ARE was produced by Rob Santos and Jeremy Holiday. Daryl Hall and John Oates served as executive producers.

J-Stache Trailer Premieres Today on www.funnyordie.com!

The Crime-fighting, Bullwhipping, Party Animal Mustache Hits the Interwebs

(Vocus/PRWEB ) July 21, 2009 -- In 1990, John Oates made a huge mistake. After years in the limelight and countless hit singles, he parted ways with one of the founding members of blue-eyed-soul duo Hall and Oates.

J-Stache and Oatesie, Ready for Action
Listen up kids, I’ve been at this since before you were in diapers No, not Darryl Hall. His mustache, better known as J-Stache.
But now, he’s back and finally getting the fame he deserves. The trailer for his new series debuts TODAY on FunnyorDie.com, so head over there, pay him some respect, and check out his blog at JStache.com.

Recently, J-Stache has been doing what he does best: pimping out Oates, who has been talking up the show to the guys over at Billboard, Bullz-Eye, Asylum, and Crave Online.

“Listen up kids, I’ve been at this since before you were in diapers,” said J-Stache. “Me and my boy Oatesie are coming to blow your mind, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

So anyway – check out the trailer over at FunnyorDie.com, read his blog at JStache.com, and follow him on Twitter.com/JStache. Don’t worry, J-Stache doesn’t get what Twitter is good for, either.

All hail the mustache, baby.

About J-Stache
The ‘70s and ‘80s were good to the mustachioed John Oates, but the rock ‘n roll lifestyle began to take a toll and he knew that change was necessary. After that fateful night in 1990 when John Oates and J-Stache split ways, J-Stache wouldn’t go quietly. He refused to slow down his hard-partying lifestyle and was determined to remain a part of Oates’ life. Now, they’re back together fighting crime and running Oates’ Aspen, CO celebrity health spa, Phunk Shui, on the side.

John Oates stars as himself, with comedian Dave Attell as the voice of J-Stache, his boozing, womanizing, and slightly drug-addled moustache. Whether battling mustachioed evildoers like Geraldo Rivera or diving down another bottle of tequila, J-Stache is a man… err… moustache… of action.

J-Stache has a blog at JStache.com, where he shares his latest exploits (like the time he saw Oprah naked after doing whippits and listening to ELO with Stedman), shares career advice (to marketer Seth Godin: “Fulfill your potential my man, we could start a pretty fresh side gig: Monopoly Guy appearances!”), and discovers the best new music out there. You should follow him on Twitter at Twitter.com/JStache.

Stories Behind The Songs Songwriter Series - April 29, 2009

The Stories Behind the Songs
A member of the American Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, John Oates’ passion for song writing was the inspiration for his new music series : “ THE STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS”, presented by the Wheeler Opera House and Jazz Aspen.

The idea for the show was born when John was invited to do a seminar at the legendary Berklee College of Music in Boston. That experience led to the development of his solo concert performances that have garnered rave reviews and become a “can’t miss show” for fans around the world.

He explains, “I realized that although people were very familiar with many of the songs that I have written over the years ...they had no idea about who or what was the inspiration behind them. In addition, people always seem fascinated and curious about the songwriter’s creative process.”

Taking a page from the classic “Nashville” style songwriters circle; a format in which the writers participate in sharing the stage and taking turns performing their material “ in the round”; John had the idea to host and produce this style show in his home town of Aspen, Colorado. He chose the acoustically pristine and beautiful Historic Wheeler Opera House as the perfect venue for the series.

This intimate, insightful and very humorous show gives the audience a glimpse into the art and craft of the song writing process in its purest form. John explains, “Songwriters by nature are an interesting, engaging and quirky group of creative people...they absorb, refract and reflect the world, then filter it though their own emotional experiences and articulate it in the form of a song. ”

The Stories Behind the Songs
Without a band onstage and with a minimalist production, both the performers and the audience can focus on the essential elements of the song itself. The intimate, acoustic setting allows the audience to become part of the show.

John says, “ I enjoy when I can see peoples faces, their reaction gives us cues as to what they like or want to hear...in between songs we talk to each other, they talk to us...we dissolve the barrier between the listener and the stage and give them a glimpse into the world of the songwriter”.

The series kicked off during the winter of 2008 with three shows. John invited some of his favorite writers to perform along side him for the initial season. The first show, headlined by the Grammy nominated, ethereal voiced Patty Griffin and supported by roots rocker Scott Miller was a smash success. This was followed by a second show featuring another Grammy nominated artist, the effervescent Tift Merritt with fan favorite, Scotty Emerick. The final show introduced the latest country music superstar, Jimmy Wayne along with song writing legend Bob Regan.
“The Stories Behind the Songs “ will continue next winter and expand into a five part series at the Wheeler Opera House. A concert tour is being planned for this fall as well.

Live From Daryl's House Special Guest: John Oates! - November 15, 2008

In the 13th edition of Live from Daryl's House, on Nov. 15, Daryl Hall joins with John Oates to celebrate the groundbreaking web-show's one-year anniversary by playing for the first time a song they insist was instrumental in bringing them together back in Philadelphia.

In the latest installment of the popular web destination, Daryl and John will spotlight Oates' recently released solo album, 1000 Miles of Life, which he recorded in Nashville with such noted collaborators as bluegrass legends Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas and Sam Bush, who hadn't played together since their days in New Grass Revival.

The highlight, though, is the duo's cover of the Memphis doo-wop obscurity, "I Want Someone," by The Mad Lads.

"It's the song that first brought John and I together as teenagers to form a group," says Daryl. "We shared a love for the tune, which, in my mind, is true American folk music."

"It was a favorite of Daryl and mine," adds John. "We saw The Mad Lads perform the song at the Uptown Theater in Philadelphia. I remember it because they wore yellow suits with white gloves. When Daryl and I met, and began to learn a little bit about each other, we discovered we both loved it. We've never played it live before. This will be a first."

Daryl and John also play four songs from Oates' solo album, including "Ghost Town," Oates' haunting ode to post-Katrina New Orleans, "Change of Seasons" and the title track. The two then launch into an impromptu version of the O'Jays' "Backstabbers" and their own "Possession Obsession."

This episode will run all month at: Live From Daryl's House.com
